European trips have provided painting opportunities in relaxed surroundings. In Sweden he has visited with his wife’s friends and family and discovered old world charm, not unlike Charleston. In France and Italy he has painted the rolling countryside, emphasizing the brown earth and fertile fields as if they offered a respite from flat coastal scenery. The scene in High Altitude—a very fresh and impressionistic oil that is more abstract than most—was inspired by a visit to the Po Valley near one of the last strongholds of the Germans during World War II. Fraser recounted how he heard a Caterpillar earthmover in the distance that suggested the tanks that once rolled across the countryside. He remarked about the contrast between the history and the reality of the peace and splendor of the setting. The experience gave him chills, which, however, are not reflected in this charming painting.
